The Chabo is a distinctive bantam with short legs, an upright tail and a charming appearance. A favourite ornamental chicken among lovers of small breeds.

1. Introduction

The Chabo is one of the world's best-known ornamental bantams. Its extremely short legs, upright tail and unique posture make it an eye-catching addition to any flock.

2. Key characteristics

  • Type: ornamental chicken
  • Size: bantam
  • Egg colour: cream to lightly tinted
  • Egg production: approximately 60-100 eggs per year
  • Temperament: calm, friendly and curious
  • Broodiness: high
  • Flying ability: limited
  • Special feature: very short legs and upright tail
  • Vaccinated: yes

3. Temperament and behaviour

The Chabo is appreciated for its gentle and pleasant nature. It is an attractive choice for hobby keepers who enjoy small ornamental breeds with plenty of personality.

4. Eggs and laying

This breed is mainly kept for ornamental purposes rather than egg production. The eggs are smaller, but its unique appearance more than compensates for that for many enthusiasts.

5. Housing and care

Because of its short legs, the Chabo performs best on dry ground. Muddy conditions can be uncomfortable, so a dry coop and sheltered environment are recommended.

Important after purchase: newly purchased chickens should initially be fed chick meal. Gradually mix in regular grain to ensure a smooth transition.

6. Who is this breed suitable for?

A good choice for:

  • bantam enthusiasts;
  • hobby keepers who value ornamental breeds;
  • families interested in unusual chickens;
  • anyone looking for a calm and attractive breed.

7. Which chickens can it live with?

The Chabo generally thrives alongside other gentle breeds such as Booted Bantam, Silkie and Cochin.

8. Why choose the Chabo?

Its distinctive body shape and charming personality make the Chabo an excellent ornamental breed for hobby poultry keepers seeking something truly different.
