The Cochin is a striking ornamental breed with abundant feathering covering even the legs. A calm and gentle chicken that adds character to any flock.

1. Introduction

The Cochin is an impressive ornamental chicken known for its rounded shape and abundant feathering. Even the legs are fully feathered, creating a soft and majestic appearance that makes this breed highly popular among hobby keepers.

2. Key characteristics

  • Type: ornamental chicken
  • Size: large
  • Egg colour: cream to light brown
  • Egg production: approximately 120-180 eggs per year
  • Temperament: calm, friendly and sociable
  • Broodiness: high
  • Flying ability: very limited
  • Special feature: heavily feathered legs and body
  • Vaccinated: yes

3. Temperament and behaviour

The Cochin is widely appreciated for its gentle nature. It moves calmly around the run and generally gets along well with people and other chickens, making it a favourite family breed.

4. Eggs and laying

Although mainly kept for ornamental purposes, the Cochin still lays a reasonable number of light-coloured eggs. Its main attraction, however, remains its appearance.

5. Housing and care

Because of its feathered legs, dry conditions are especially important. Wet and muddy ground can damage the feathers or make them difficult to maintain.

Important after purchase: newly purchased chickens should initially be fed chick meal. Gradually mix in increasing amounts of regular grain to ensure a smooth transition.

6. Who is this breed suitable for?

A good choice for:

  • enthusiasts of large ornamental breeds;
  • families with children;
  • hobby keepers looking for calm chickens;
  • anyone wanting a striking flock centrepiece.

7. Which chickens can it live with?

The Cochin generally lives well alongside calm breeds such as Faverolles, Silkie and Booted Bantam.

8. Why choose the Cochin?

The Cochin combines size, feathering and a gentle personality in one breed. Few chickens create such an impressive presence while remaining so easy-going.

10. Advice from De Hagedoorn

The Cochin is at its best in a dry, spacious environment. Regular attention to the feathered legs and suitable flock companions will help this breed remain healthy and beautiful.
