The White Sussex is a calm, versatile hen with good egg production and a pleasant temperament. A great choice for backyard keepers looking for a sociable laying hen.

1. Introduction

The White Sussex is a sturdy, versatile chicken that fits well into a backyard flock. This traditional dual-purpose breed is a good choice for anyone looking to combine reliable egg production with a calm and approachable chicken.

2. Key characteristics

  • Type: laying hen / dual-purpose breed
  • Size: medium to large
  • Egg colour: light brown to brown
  • Egg production: approximately 180-250 eggs per year
  • Temperament: calm, curious and sociable
  • Broodiness: may become broody
  • Flying ability: rather limited
  • Vaccinated: yes

Egg production is an indication and can vary according to age, season, nutrition and living conditions.

3. Temperament and behaviour

The Sussex is generally an easy-going chicken that enjoys foraging and exploring its surroundings. Its relatively calm nature makes it suitable for keepers who prefer a chicken that is not excessively nervous or active.

4. Eggs and laying

The Sussex combines good egg production with the characteristics of a heavier dual-purpose breed. This makes it especially suitable for keepers who value a versatile backyard chicken rather than maximum egg production alone.

5. Housing and care

Give the Sussex sufficient space to forage and move around. Because of its heavier build, an easily accessible coop with suitable perches is recommended.

Important after purchase: newly purchased chickens should initially be fed chick meal. Gradually mix in an increasing amount of regular grain to allow a smooth transition to their subsequent diet.

6. Who is this breed suitable for?

A good choice for:

  • new and experienced chicken keepers;
  • families and backyard keepers;
  • anyone looking for both eggs and a calm temperament;
  • mixed flocks with other peaceful breeds.

7. Which chickens can a Sussex live with?

The Sussex generally combines well with other calm to moderately calm chickens of a similar size. Wyandotte, Brahma and Mechelse Koekoek can be suitable companions. Always introduce new chickens gradually into an existing flock.

8. Why choose a White Sussex?

The White Sussex is a good option if you want a versatile chicken with a calm nature and good laying ability. If maximum egg production is your main priority, a specialised laying hen may be the better choice.

10. Advice from De Hagedoorn

The Sussex is particularly suitable if you are looking for a good balance between temperament and egg production. Provide plenty of foraging space and preferably keep it with chickens of a similarly calm nature.
